Hello members,
This is a late summer hello and updates as we move into a busy fall season.
Hi ONEIG Members,
Help us speak out now against Omnibus Bill 197 that the Ontario government is trying to quickly and quietly pass without legislative or public hearings.
The process is curtailed to the extent that the consequences of this legislation can’t be discussed and debated.
Buried within this Omnibus Bill are changes to the Environmental Assessment Act which will bar experts from assessing the environmental impacts of many public infrastructure projects, and keep communities in the dark about what’s happening in their own backyards.
Dear ONEIG member,
Do you have a passion for environmental health issues? Are you interested in speaking out for the environment? We are looking for members to join the Ontario Nurses for the Environment Interest Group (ONEIG) executive.
The ONEIG is seeking nominees for the following positions:
Hi ONEIG members,
Thank you to those who were able to attend the quarterly meeting last Wednesday; it was wonderful to see so many of you and to share in the excitement of the momentum for environmental action, particularly post AGM. For those who missed the meeting, the draft minutes are attached to this email.
We had the opportunity to debrief from the AGM. Please check out ONEIG's members' voices submission.
Hi ONEIG members,
We are THRILLED to share that ONEIG's Resolution 2: Access to Safe Water and Sanitation was carried at the 2020 RNAO AGM by an overwhelming majority!
Thank you to everyone who worked to make this happen with particular kudos to ONEIG's AMAZING Communications ENO Josalyn Radcliffe who worked tirelessly to prepare for the resolution process and spoke so eloquently to the resolution on Friday evening:
Hi everyone,
It is a busy season as we prepare for our resolution submission and the AGM this week.
We will be having our quarterly interest group meeting the following week, Wednesday June 17th at 7pm.
The meeting will be an opportunity to connect post AGM, debrief, review our activities over the last few months and to plan for the time ahead. Curious about learning more about ONEIG, possibly getting more involved? Join us!
Kind regards,
Hello ONEIG members!
Don't miss your chance to watch the documentary The Story of Plastic!
ONEIG has a special community screening to this new documentary until June 8th. You can access the link here.
Hi ONEIG members,
Tune in on Zoom for a Resolutions Meeting in preparation for the upcoming AGM this June. Resolutions (See Resolutions Here) submitted by members from across the province will be reviewed, and you will have the chance to voice your thoughts on the future direction of RNAO.
Date: June 2, 2020 at 7pm EST
Many thanks,
Dear Toronto-based ONEIG members,
We are sharing this urgent call to action from our friends at The David Suzuki Foundation.
On Thursday May 28 (this week!!) Toronto city council will vote on whether to extend the Bloor bike lane. This would create a safe cycling route all the way from Avenue Road to High Park.
We think this is a fabulous idea.
Around the world, cities are quickly building new bike lanes to allow for safe physical distancing. Now it’s Toronto's turn.
It's time to take action!
Please join us for a short chat about the issue of waste in our healthcare system, a problem that has been recognized in Canada and worldwide.
ZOOM Discussion: May 26th from 1200-1300 (EST)
Dear ONEIG members,
Thank you to all of you who joined us last week for the Tackling Plastics Pollution and Promoting Health webinar--a link to the recording will be available shortly.
On the topic of plastics, we are VERY EXCITED to be able to offer you a special community screening of the new documentary, The Story of Plastic until June 8th. You can access the link here.
Dear ONEIG members,
On behalf of ONEIG, I want to extend a special wish to all of you for a Happy International Nurses' Day and Nurses' Week.
With our busy days and the many ways our minds are full in attending to multitudes of care concerns, it is important to pause and feel recognized for our dedication to the care of communities and for our passion in promoting health and healing. Because we do so much and do it well, it is all the more important that this work is underscored, promoted, understood.
Dear ONEIG members!
We are excited to invite you to join us and Environmental Defence next week for a special webinar on May 13th at 7pm that explores the pervasive challenge of plastics pollution.
Hello ONEIG members!
We hope you're doing well and staying safe. Later this month, we will be hosting a web discussion for interested members to talk and make a plan to address one of the top concerns of our members: Greening the Healthcare System. There are a lot of ways to approach this broad topic and we want to make a concrete plan to move ahead, so we have a very quick 2 minute survey for you if you'd like to help us set the agenda! The survey will close May 9th to give us time to plan!
Dear lovely ONEIG members!
As we await for the federal government to declare plastics as toxic for the environment, we are excited to invite you to join us and Environmental Defence for a special webinar on May 13th at 7pm that explores the pervasive challenge of plastics pollution.
Dear ONEIG members,
We would like to take the opportunity to mark this very special 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
While celebrations for this day are different this year under the realities of COVID-19, it is an important opportunity for all of us to reflect on this beautiful and amazing place that all of us call home. Today is also an opportunity to continue in our collective efforts to promote and fight for environmental health and justice.
Dear ONEIG members,
The Ontario government recently announced it will suspend public oversight and transparency in environmental decision-making during the COVID-19 emergency.
This change allows the government to push forward projects or laws that could significantly damage the environment without consulting or notifying the public.
Dear ONEIG members,
We hope this message finds you well in these uncertain times.
Through our members' survey, we heard from a number of you who want to get more involved with ONEIG.
With this in mind, we are having a meeting next week to meet with those of you who are available and looking to get more involved on issues of environmental health and justice.
This will be an special opportunity to connect with other ONEIG volunteers, organize, and prioritize issues for future action.
Here is the meeting information:
Dear ONEIG Members,
COVID19 has landed in our lives, changing our environment and the ways we live, work, and play in dramatically as we strive to limit its travel across borders and within communities. We have seen unprecedented global action to transform modern life--demonstrating our great human capacity to adapt and face emerging challenges.
Access to safe water and sanitation for all is essential to life and a matter of environmental and social justice. Unfortunately, there are over 100 drinking water advisories in First Nations across Canada and no national strategy to address urgent water issues.
The COVID-19 pandemic compounds harms of historically marginalized communities. Our collective recovery must build stronger, healthier communities, including healthy environmental public policy that challenges structural inequities, including environmental racism.
We need our governments to take immediate, future-minded action now to ensure the foundational conditions for human health and wellbeing are sustained for generations to come.
