This presentation will examine stigma,  the impact of stigma on people who live with a mental illness, and how we treat these individuals. It will also look at how stigma is addressed in other parts of the world, and what we individually can do to create awareness and reduce stigma.

This presentation will explore:

  • What is stigma and discrimination?
  • How is stigma dealt with globally?
  • What can we do as mental health care professionals?

Mary Lou has worked as a registered nurse for Cota in Toronto, Ontario for the last 8 years. Initially, she  worked on the ACTTEAM and currently with ARCS (Accessing Resources and Community Services). Mary Lou became passionate about mental health when she became ill with depression in 1985. She was on the mental health reform committee and the planning committee from 1995-2006. Mary Lou was a board member and chair for York Support Services, and on the board of Whitby Mental Health Centre as it prepared for divestment.
