Webcast: Fostering Hope in Persons with Mental Illness: A Nursing Priority

Posted on June 25, 2018, 9:54 a.m.

Hope is imperative to recovery in mental illness, so much so that hopelessness is considered a key risk factor for suicide and other negative health outcomes.  The requirement to foster hope in patients, and in families, is stressed in nursing education, however, there is a dearth of evidence on how nurses experience maintaining this responsibility.  This presentation describes an interpretive description study into nurse’s experiences of fostering hope in patients with mental illness.  Key findings include hope fostering interventions, some of which may require a cognitive shift and expansion of awareness of the influence of the nurses’ self within the therapeutic relationship
