Hello members,

Please join us for the upcoming CFMHN webinar on Oct. 20, 2022 from 7–8 p.m. (Access to this webinar and other CFMHN resources is included in your MHNIG membership!)

Topic 1: A mental health and substance use virtual learning platform for service providers

There is a growing need for mental health and substance use (MHSU) education across all emergency, acute and community settings in our health region. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the opioid epidemic, requests for support are increasing in our region which is made up of urban, rural and remote areas, including 14 First Nation communities.

However, MHSU services in rural and remote sites face many staffing challenges, including access to educators. These considerations make sustainable and timely education initiatives a challenge. Education and training for the care of specialized populations – such as our growing population struggling with MHSU concerns – poses unique challenges.

Our session will cover how the design of the MHSU portal addresses gaps within MHSU education across the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. The comprehensive evaluation of the MHSU portal will also be discussed along with the resulting sustainability plan.

Presenters:

  • Courtney Devane RN, MN; PhD candidate and regional lead at Vancouver Coastal Health
  • Dominic Chan RN; MN Student and clinical planner at Vancouver Coastal Health
  • Natasha Parent BA; PhD Candidate at University of British Columbia

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand the extent to which the MHSU Education Portal is addressing knowledge gaps related to mental health and substance use
  2. Identify the reach, relevance, and usability of the MHSU Education Portal across the health region
  3. Describe strategies to optimize relevance, sustainability and communicate the MHSU Education Portal as a resource to service providers

Topic 2: Building mental health nursing skills through virtual education

St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) Mental Health and Addiction Program (MHAP) orientation is unique in addressing the gap of knowledge and skills in mental health nursing.

Context: Many nursing schools in Southern Ontario rely on clinical placement to provide exposure and build the knowledge and skills required in mental health nursing for their students. But with limitations on clinical placement opportunities imposed by COVID-19, SJHH MHAP noted that many of their new hires didn't have placement or work experience in a mental health setting. Another barrier for new mental health nurses to build comfort and competencies resulted from the lack of in-person class orientation because of pandemic-related restrictions in 2020.

SJHH MHAP Educators addressed these gaps by providing a multi-level orientation using virtual education, which supported newly-hired nurses in building their confidence and competence.

Presenters:

  • Seonhee McDermott RN, CPMHN(c), MScN; nurse educator, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton
  • Heather Dunlop-Witt RN, CPMNH(c), MN; clinical nurse educator, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton

Learning objective:
Introduction and overview of three staged virtual orientations and discussion of findings
