The RNAO Palliative and Ottawa Region 10 Annual Fall Tour 2025 highlights critical funding and support to enhance palliative care services across Ontario. It includes:

  • Increased Hospice Bed Base Funding: Expanding the availability of hospice beds for end-of-life care.
  • Palliative Care Clinical Coaches & Education One-Time Funding: Supporting clinical coaches and educational opportunities to enhance palliative care practices.
  • Indigenous Community/Organization Funding: Nine streams of one-time funding to support self-determined, culturally sensitive palliative care programming in Indigenous communities.
  • Net New Hospice Bed Base Funding: Expanding Hospice care capacity to meet rising demand.
  • Grief & Bereavement Volunteer Service Funding: Supporting grief and bereavement services and volunteers who assist families coping with loss.
  • Professional Services Base Funding: Sustaining and expanding professional palliative care services.
  • Implementation of Model of Care for Palliative Care in the Community: Supporting the adoption of standardized palliative care models in community settings.
  • Release of Models of Care for Hospital and Paediatric Palliative Care: Ensuring high-quality, consistent palliative care in hospital and paediatric environments.

However, a significant barriers that still need to be addressed. Low wages for community nurses continue to deter many from working in community settings, where the need is greatest. Furthermore, many agencies do not treat nurses well, leading to high turnover and burnout. These agencies often fail to provide adequate support, respect, or recognition for the demanding work community nurse do.  Some agencies even make community nurses work without paying them, expecting unpaid overtime or uncompensated work outside regular hours. This lack of fair compensation, respect, and support not only affects the wellbeing of the nursing workforce but also undermines the quality of care that patients and families receive in the community setting.

While funding initiatives are crucial to improving care, it is equally important to address these systemic issues by ensuring fair wages and better working conditions for community nurses to sustain the palliative care workforce and improve patient outcomes.
