We are now accepting nominations for the 16th annual R.N.A.O. Lois Fairley Nursing Award!
It's time again to recognize the Windsor-Essex County "Nurse of the Year" from the many dedicated and wonderful nurses who make a difference every day with their patients in our community. The award is selected and given by the Windsor-Essex chapter of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) from nominations received from the public.
If you or a loved one have ever needed nursing care in a hospital, at home or through our public health nurses, you know the difference that an outstanding nurse makes with patients and their families. Nominate that person.
In the past few years, the recipients of this award were "All Nurses Throughout Windsor and Essex County" for their outstanding care and extra effort demonstrated during COVID. As a symbol of their service to our community, there are dedicated benches at Windsor's Jackson Park, Leamington's Seacliff Park and outside the Amherstburg Health and Wellness Centre on Richmond Street, recognizing the valuable contribution of Windsor and Essex County nurses.
This award is named in honour of local registered nurse (RN) Lois Fairley. Lois was a graduate of Grace Hospital in Windsor in 1955, where she served until her retirement in 1993. She worked in a number of departments in the hospital, serving as a head nurse and mentor to students in the nursing programs of the University of Windsor and St. Clair College. As provincial president of The Ontario Nurses' Association, she was an advocate for the nursing profession and for the patients in their care. Lois also served in a number of roles with the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, including as a board member.
At the hospital, Lois also led and promoted fundraising efforts to improve patient services. Her greatest satisfaction as an RN was the time spent in direct patient care, where she exemplified the best traditions of the nursing profession. Lois passed away in July 2007, leaving a lasting legacy of love and caring.
