This project explores the critical balance between accessibility and security in electronic health records (EHRs). As digital health technologies evolve, healthcare organizations must ensure patient data remains accessible to providers and protected from cyber threats.

Through this TED Talk-inspired presentation, I analyze the growing risks of data breaches, the impact on patient trust, and the financial and ethical consequences of inadequate data protection. I also present innovative solutions, including blockchain technology, decentralized identity management, and data masking techniques, to enhance security while maintaining efficiency in healthcare.

This project is designed to inform healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public about the urgent need for stronger digital health security measures. It provides well-researched recommendations, supported by recent academic literature, on creating a secure and patient-centred digital health ecosystem.

By sharing this work, I hope to contribute to the conversation on healthcare cybersecurity and encourage action toward a safer and more trustworthy digital health future.

The Double Edged-Sword of Digital Health: Access vs. Protection. By Emily Presswood BScN, RN

Queen’s Park Day 2025: Advocating for a Healthier Ontario 🏛️💬

Members of the RNAO Hamilton Chapter joined nurses and nursing students from across the province at Queen’s Park for RNAO’s annual Queen’s Park Day — a powerful day of advocacy and action.

This year’s event was especially important as we approached the next Ontario provincial election. RNAO is actively calling on all political parties to prioritize health system transformation, nursing workforce sustainability, and social determinants of health in their platforms.

Throughout the day, RNAO members discussed & learned about key issues, including:
✔️ Safe staffing ratios and full-time employment for nurses
✔️ Expanding the NP role and increasing access to primary care
✔️ Addressing housing, income inequality, and climate change as core health issues

We’re proud to report that RNAO’s advocacy goals are gaining traction — with growing support among MPPs for evidence-based solutions that protect nurses and improve patient care.

As always, our voices are stronger together. Thank you to everyone who represented the Hamilton Chapter — your passion and leadership are helping shape the future of healthcare in Ontario. 💙

Stay tuned for more advocacy updates and how you can get involved during this important election year!
