NLN President’s Update
In 2017 the Nursing Leadership Network of Ontario (NLN.ON) began its journey to lead and support the evolution of nursing leadership in Ontario through the creation of NLN.ON’s Strategic Plan for 2017-2022. Many thanks to Judy Shearer, NLN.ON Past President for her ongoing leadership. The NLN.ON board remains committed to working collaboratively and in partnership with other key professional nursing associations to support the nurse leader of today coupled with creating a vision for nursing leadership tomorrow.
In March 2018, we held our annual NLN.ON conference entitled, “Better Together: Realizing our Collective Potential.” This theme not only resonated with our vision of “Nurses Leading Nurses in Ontario” but also reflects our strategic themes of “Creating One Voice,” “Collaborative Partner” and “Innovation and Education.” As nursing leaders, it is imperative we continue to work in partnership and collaborate as leadership is critical to advancing the nursing profession. We are “better together!”
Since the inception of our 2017 Strategic Plan, NLN.ON has achieved many accomplishments:
- Initiated a new Sustaining Member category – to have a more inclusive membership as we are “better together!”
- Created a promotional video for NLN.ON and launched it at our NLN.ON Annual Conference
- Created a New Graduate/Novice non-voting member to the NLN.ON Board of Directors to create opportunities for one voice, collaborating with others and remaining connected with novice nursing leaders
- Renewed focus on Partnerships and Collaboration in Nursing – “one voice”
- Realigned he NLN.ON Annual Education and Research awards inclusive of anew “NLN.ON Innovation Seed Grant”
In keeping with our strategic theme of “Collaborative Partner,” timing could not be better! The Canadian Nursing Association (CNA) is simultaneously developing their strategic direction NLN.ON and CNA are engaging in dialogue with CNA’ s Chief
Executive Officer Michael Villeneuve, to explore leadership synergies between the two organizations. CNA is developing as part of their 2020 Vision, a Leadership Center as they evolve their programs. This would be an ideal opportunity to collaborate with other provinces about nursing leadership. NLN.ON is unique as we are the only province that has a Nursing Leadership Network!
The Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (RPNAO) not only continues to support our annual conference by encouraging their members to attend, but also by engaging in dialogue with NLN.ON to explore potential leadership opportunities as well. We look forward to further collaboration with Dianne Martin, RPNAO’s Chief Executive Officer and their board!
Developing and strengthening current and emerging nurse leaders is a long term commitment that requires ongoing planning, collaboration and partnering. Our emerging leaders have very important work ahead as health care evolves, our nursing practice environments continue to change and this means that we continue to strive for excellent patient outcomes. Nursing leadership is the key to success.
As leaders, we must continue to be responsive to change needs and demands that are sustainable in the midst of competing priorities. We are “better together!”
Thank you,
Donna Rothwell, RN, BScN, MN
NLN.ON President
Proposed Revisions to NLN Bylaws: Changes to membership categories and Board of Directors
In support of the NLN strategic themes of Creating One Voice and Collaborative Partnerships, the NLN BOD conducted a review of existing governance best practice and models. In addition, the NLN BOD also reviewed with great interest the growing movement of greater intra- professional collaboration within the family of nursing across various associations and regulatory bodies across Canada. With this in mind, proposed changes were presented to the members in attendance at the 2018 AGM, that would enable the advancement of our strategic themes. The changes under consideration include the following:
Membership categories
- Changing the name of the “Sustaining” member category to “Independent".
- The Independent membership category shall be open to all categories of nurses (e.g. Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Nurse Practitioners) involved or interested in a career in nursing leadership or health care management. An Independent shall be entitled to all the rights and privileges of an Active member.
Board of Directors
- Change from directors elected based on regional representation (Regions 1 – 12), to election of directors based a competency / skill based matrix (years of experience as a nurse leader, practice setting / sector, rural / urban, ect….). This would enable NLN to ensure that the BOD best reflects the characteristic and qualities of the NLN membership.
- The number of Directors would remain the same.
In accordance with one member – one vote, these changes would be put to NLN members for a formal vote in late Fall 2018. To provide more detailed information about the proposed bylaw changes, we will host a series of webinars prior to the scheduled vote. In the interim, should you have have questions regarding this, please to not hesitate to forward your questions to Sara Lankshear via info.nln.on@firststageinc.com
