This year we have our guest speaker and talented scholar Cathy Newman RN, BScN, SSW who we welcomed as FCNIG’s new Communications ENO for the next term. Cathy’s 45 years of faith guided service to vulnerable populations of Toronto, began as a street Youth Worker in shelters and outreach programs sponsored by Anglican, and Catholic faith communities. After becoming an RN, Cathy spent 31 years providing Nursing care as well as program development, in various settings that included supportive housing initiatives, often backed by Faith Communities. Her formal Faith Community Nursing preparation was obtained through Dayton University, during her time as a Parish Nurse at a large central Toronto congregation.

Health and Social system navigation, focused on Housing Support and Food Security, has become central to Cathy’s current work as an RN in pro bono independent practice. As well as a director on a non-profit housing board, and member of a supportive housing community council, Cathy is a  member of the Ontario Non- Profit Housing Association (ONPHA), and through ONPHA’s educational opportunities obtained certificates in Supportive Housing Work (2025) and Governance Essentials for non-profit Housing Directors (2024). After the pandemic revealed barriers to food security, a crisis that has persisted post pandemic, Cathy completed what she describes as an “eye opening” course in Urban Food Security. Toronto Metropolitan University (2023).

Cathy will be talking about the role of the faith community nurse in housing and food security.
