Webinar: The Pandemic and Aging Families

Posted on March 5, 2021, 10:46 a.m.

The Retired Nurses Interest Group (RETNIG) has a mandate to mentor nurses in the profession and advocate for the well-being of nurses and the general population.

This webinar is designed for members of the public and those working in health care to engage in meaningful conversations surrounding issues that are impacting aging families as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has moved through communities world-wide creating devastation and in-conceivable loss. Through this pandemic, the gaps and frailties of our more vulnerable senior populations have been brought to light. Sadly, many seniors living in long-term care homes have contracted COVD-19 and have succumbed to the virus.

This pandemic has shed light on the needs of seniors in long-term care homes, as well as the toll this pandemic has created for care partners, family and friends of seniors.

The necessary attention has been placed on how to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Policymakers are also placing attention on category and ratio of staff per resident/senior. An increase in salary has also been implemented to support the staff caring for the population within long-term care homes. However, policymakers and administrators must not lose sight of the impact and needs of the care partners and families who are impacted by the loss of their loved ones and those who are struggling with the inability to maintain meaningful contact with them.
