National Indigenous Peoples Day--Call for Volunteers

Posted on June 5, 2020, 7:49 p.m.

Dear NRIG members,

I hope all are well.

I am a nursing student from Ryerson University involved with CNSA (Canadian Nursing Student’s Association) - NCU (Nursing Course Union) which is a student-led nursing group affiliated with the university. We hope to virtually celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on the 21st of June to recognize and celebrate Indigenous nurses and nurse researchers as well as honour the diverse cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples. We are collaborating with NRIG on the following initiatives, and invite interested members to contact myself or Amy Wright, NRIG chair, using the email addresses noted below.

1) Spotlighting nurses - We wish to highlight the important work that Indigenous nurses and nurse researchers are doing in Canada. If you identify as Indigenous and are willing to share your experiences with our members through our social media platforms, please contact us at one of the emails below for more details.

2) Panel discussion on the 19th of June, 2020 – We are inviting Indigenous nurse researchers and non-Indigenous nurse researchers who conduct research with Indigenous communities, to participate in an online panel discussion to share their experiences of nursing research. This discussion will provide a forum for learning more about culturally safe research with Indigenous people, from the perspectives of Indigenous nurse researchers and allies. The panel will be hosted live on the 19th of June 2020, on an online platform and will be moderated by CNSA-NCU. A series of questions will be emailed to each interested member before the panel to prepare for the discussion. If you’re willing to participate, please contact myself or Amy Wright using an email address noted below.

Members interested in taking part in either of the above opportunities are kindly requested to contact us by June 13 for further details and inquiries. On behalf of CNSA-NCU and NRIG, we thank you for supporting this celebration and look forward to connecting with you.

Sincerely,

Ashwini Veerasuntharam, NCU Director of Public Relations and Diversity
